Hello my name is Bradley Dayment, i am an electrician or electrical contractor in Bristol in Emersons Green specialising in house rewiring and electrical rewiring and electrical consumer unit installations.  Although this is my base i cover Bristol entirely.  I currently help maintain 350 properties in the Clifton area of Bristol, The kind of work we undertake may be as small as changing a light switch to changing over a fuse board for a modern consumer unit.  I also undertake full house rewires in Bristol, with full testing and inspecting carried out by myself.  I also offer Periodic reporting, which is vital for landlords to prove safety of the electrical supply for continued use. I will design an electrical system to your specifications, whether it is power to your garage and pond or whether it is simply an installation of six spotlights in your kitchen.  The balance of light in any area is very important and needs a lot of thought so always be sure what it is you require.

Most people are completely unaware that their electrical system is unsafe, they seem to take the attitude that "if it works, it's ok" but the truth is that many working installations are not safe at all, that's why you need an NICEIC registered electrician, this way you can be sure of compliance with Part P of the building regulations.  For example An electric shower installed by a DIY person is likely to be highly dangerous, firstly it must have an RCD this is a device which operates at very low earth faults.  Why is this important? If you were being electrocuted due to a crack in a shower(which i have personally seen) your body will carry more current probably leading to death.  An RCD (fitted correctly by an electrician) will Automatically disconnect the supply before a deadly current can flow.  Fuses WILL NOT do this, they break at their rating eg 5 amps, Remember 1 amp will kill the average adult male.  Other factors to remember is cable size, if it is too small usually 10mm CSA is required for modern showers, it will overheat and has the potential to cause a fire, therfore you will need full electrical rewiring of that circuit.

For this reason you should always talk to a trained electrician before any electrical work is undertaken particularly new electrical consumer unit installation and house rewiring.  And if you move into a house ask to see the last periodic report, this will describe the condition of the supply in great detail reducing the risk of an electrical fault in the near future.  It should be done everytime there is a change of tenancy, use, or after a period of five years.  Every circuit in the consumer unit should be tested, including all lighting circuits and sockets. These take the longest and are commonly bipased in the industry by dodgy electricians.  Full installation certificated should be issued after all rewiring, whether it's just a lighting circuit or a whole house.
An electrician in Bristol like myself has a lot to think about when designing, installing and testing and inspecting an electrical system, like earthing arrangement, earth loop impedance, volt drops, correct installation methods, correct cable sizing, correct mcb, RCD trip time, insulation resistance, BS7671 17th edition wirring regulations, cable lengths, segregation, SELV circuits, diversity and much much more, so be aware that a working circuit isn't neccessarily a SAFE electrical system. So make sure you choose the right electrician in Bristol for you, keep it local use a smaller electrical contractor, you will get a much more personal electrical service.
